Hiring Your First 10 Engineers at a Semiconductor Startup
The first ten hires define your technical culture and your tape-out timeline. Sequence them deliberately, and hire people who can build the next ten.
Start with the technical spine
Your first hires should cover the core of your product: architecture, design and verification for chips, or device design and test for photonics. Each should be capable of hiring and mentoring.
Pre-seed to Series A
Expect to sell the vision hard. Equity, technical ownership and the founding team's credibility matter more than salary benchmarks at this stage.
Do not forget commercial and operations
Supply chain, foundry relationships and early business development often need a hire before the board expects it. Missing these slows the path to revenue.
Move quickly, assess deeply
Short processes win candidates; rigorous technical interviews protect quality. Use a specialist to pre-assess so your engineers only meet serious contenders.
